The Urban Futures Innovation Hub was alive with energy and enthusiasm on May 9, 2025 as young changemakers gathered for the official orientation of the Youth Council Committee. The meeting marked a significant step in empowering youth to lead transformative efforts in building inclusive and sustainable urban food systems in Chongwe.
The orientation session welcomed newly appointed youth leaders tasked with championing food systems transformation under the Urban Futures Project—a global initiative supported by Hivos and the Botnar Foundation. In Zambia, the project being implemented by CUTS in partnership with the Global Network Solution is focused on mobilizing youth in Chongwe to promote climate resilience, innovation, and sustainability in the food sector.
Key Highlights from the Meeting:
Youth Council members received an overview of the Urban Futures Project, highlighting its commitment to youth-led innovation and inclusive urban development.
The youth leaders celebrated several achievements, including the successful submission of youth-led budget proposals for the 2026 national budget, ongoing business mentorship programs designed to equip young entrepreneurs with skills to grow their SMEs and access finance and markets.
Awareness campaigns aimed at inspiring mindset change around food consumption and sustainability.
Training of over 50 youth in sustainable agricultural practices—many of whom are now actively promoting and practicing eco-friendly farming methods.
Participants shared their visions, ideas, and aspirations for a more equitable and sustainable urban food future. The passion and commitment displayed by the youth leaders set a hopeful tone for the project’s next phase.
